We're looking for Sign Language Interpreters to serve Deaf and hard-of-hearing students with behavioral needs across K-12 school settings in Suffolk County Public Schools and nearby districts for the 2026–2027 school year and beyond. What You'll Do
You'll support deaf and hard-of-hearing students with interpretation services:
1:1 Student Support Accompany a specific student throughout their school day, using ASL to provide continuous behavioral and academic support tailored to their individual goals.
General Classroom Support Work alongside a lead teacher to assist multiple students in a structured classroom, using ASL to facilitate communication, comprehension, and behavioral redirection in real time.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Interpret for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom and school settings, including lectures, discussions, directions, and school events
- Support student participation by facilitating communication between students, teachers, and peers, including answering and asking questions
- Prepare for lessons by reviewing instructional materials, videos, and vocabulary to ensure accurate and effective interpretation
- Assist teachers in creating accessible, visually supportive learning environments, including optimal seating and use of visual aids
- Provide small group or individual instruction to reinforce academic concepts using teacher-directed materials
- Support oral language development and use of instructional tools and resources
- Monitor student progress and support IEP goals in collaboration with teachers
- Interpret during meetings, events, and between staff, students, and parents
- Promote life skills, social skills, and positive behavior
- Assist with classroom tasks, materials, and student supervision
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods (e.g., PSE, SEE)
- Passing score on an approved interpreting assessment (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), or equivalent)
- Preferred EIPA score of 3.5+ (or VQAS Level 3)
- Candidates with an EIPA score of 2.4+ (or VQAS Level 2) may be considered if willing to reassess and improve scores
- Ability to accurately interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa in real time
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and effective communication practices
- High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL, Interpreting, or related field preferred
- Strong attention to detail, listening, and cognitive processing skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and families
- Physical stamina to sustain active interpreting (repetitive hand/arm movement, visual focus)
Preferred:
- Prior school or classroom experience
- Experience supporting Deaf or hard-of-hearing students
- Experience supporting students with autism or other special needs
- Familiarity with behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
